The problem with paper organization is that
it’s so easily destroyed. One errant pop spill and all that hard work was a
sopping sticky mess. Today’s students can use online tools at their disposal to
stay on top of assignments and organize their schedule. Even better, parents
can instantly see how their star student is doing and give some helpful
prodding if Joe starts to fall behind in subjects.
Soshiku is a free
online resource for tracking school work that organizes tasks by course, colour
coding projects with their associated class. The home page shows all entered
assignments, organized by due date with overdue showing at the top. In addition
to the calendar and to-do style list of in-progress projects, Soshiku adds the
ability to partner up with fellow classmates to share tasks and keep tabs on
their progress toward a communal goal. Also cool: notes, images and files can
be uploaded and stored with the assignment so that everything you need to work
is in one place. Optional text or email reminders can be set for those that
need an extra reminder of nearing deadlines.
While it’s not a calendar or task management tool, Evernote is a great way to gather all the pieces related to a larger project
in one place. Perhaps Joe is writing a research paper on the effects of the
coffee industry on rural development in Brazil. He’s sure to gather all manner
of web links, images, quotes, and notes. With Evernote, she can save everything
to an online account that will organize the information and allow him to search
by keywords in text or in images.
Designed to
integrate with handheld mobile devices like tablets, there are a bunch of
complementary apps that make Evernote really great. Use a stylus and the
Penultimate app to write notes on your iPad’s screen. Evernote translates your
handwriting into searchable text, making it easy to find all references to a
keyword throughout your captured materials. Evernote Peek turns your notes into
quiz questions, and then works with your iPad’s smart cover as a study tool –
lift one portion for question, another for the answer.
